Dan Campbell

Setting the Tone

He started his professional carreer when he was Drafted by the New York Giants in the 1999 NFL Draft. From there he went to the Cowboys, Lions, and Saints. After retiring in 2008, he transition into being a Tight Ends coach for the Miami Dolphins. He was given the interm Head Coach nod after Joe Philbin was fired. After that, he went to New Orleans and was their Tight Ends coach as well as the Assistant Head Coach where he stayed until, in 2021, he was hired by Detroit to replace the disaster that was Matthew Patricia.

From his introudctury press confrence where he spoke of biting kneecaps and dragging your opponents to the deep end to drown them, he promised to lead the team with passion, heart, and most importantly, GRIT. That word would become synonymous with not only the team, but the enitre city as well.

Leadership and Buy-In

One of the most important things to Dan Campbell was that his players bought into his methods. From live tackling in practice to exhaustive film study, he needed players willing to do what was required. He also made sure to let his players know that he intended to be lock step with them every step of the way. He even would go out and do the warmup drills with the team before practice. This built a culture of guys willing to come in and do what it took to get the job done.

That’s why the Campbell era is often described as a culture shift. The team knew that there would be no easy wins. In fact, through his first season, he lost the first 10 games straight. No one on the team gave up, however. In fact, this streak only helped to further instill the culture that Dan was building. That early stretch showed everyone that this wasn’t going to be a quick turnaround, but it also proved that the message was real. The players continued to compete hard every week and never stopped buying into what Campbell was building. Over time, that mindset started to show up in close games and big moments, and the foundation he laid during those losses became the reason the team could handle success later on.
